RAE SPOON — SUPERIORYOUAREINFERIOR (KILLBEAT MUSIC)
Anyone who saw Rae Spoon when she was performing regular gigs at the Boathouse a couple of years ago would have caught Canada’s first self-professed transgender country singer — Hank meets Dolly in the same body, as it were.
On his fourth studio album superioryouareinferior, Spoon switches from bare-bones country to a fusion of soft rock and noisy electronica. It’s an interesting mix.
But it’s the artistry of the songs themselves that continue to mark Spoon as a songwriter of merit, whether writing about singing whales or wolves that haunt the imagination. Gender aside, Spoon is an intriguing singer/songwriter.
